FACING YOUR FEAR
When young people reach adolescence, they find themselves confronted by many challenges; public examinations, choosing a career and undergoing self examination as they try to find their own identity. The girl has to discover for herself the joys and responsibilities of womanhood. The boy has to prove to himself that he is a man and that he can stand on his own two feet. None of this is very clear to the youth and the result is a certain amount of insecurity and the fear of failure.
- Am I going to pass my exams?
- Why am I less popular than Emeka or Joy?
- What am I going to be?
- Will I be a failure in life?
If you wish must confront them. If you turn from your fear or try to run away from it, you will find that the fear only becomes worse. Such is the way of fear. It is by nature of coward. Once you confront it you must however identify it clearly. That is the secret. Look at it closely. See what exactly is frightening you. Then don’t turn away. Look at it straight in the face.
The ultimate answer to all your fears is Jesus Christ. One escapes from fear by focusing one’s whole being on Christ. Look at Jesus rather than your problem. The problem may not go away immediately, but you will find that you can cope with it. Remember the story in the gospel about Peter walking on the waters of Galilee. The point is, that a solid, close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the best answer to all our fears.
